Resource Reservations on Linux

Thanks to its Open Source license, the evolution of the Linux kernel is continuous, as is its performance: from the kernel 2.4 to the latest version 2.6 the real-time performance has improved by a factor 50x, in both the average and worst case interrupt latency and task switch times. The performance of the standard Linux kernel can now be suitable for some (soft real-time) applications, but other critical designs still require more stringent timings. Several approaches have been proposes in the last years to add real-time capabilities to the standard kernel. Evidence engineers are experts in both hard and soft real-time scheduling algorithms and can help you to analyze the timing requirements and constraints of the system under development, and to choose the most appropriate approach to your needs.

Evidence started as a spin-off company of the ReTiS (Real-Time Systems) Laboratory of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna , and it keeps providing significant advances in the state of the art of real-time analysis and multiprocessor scheduling. Evidence is particularly skilled on the implementation of Resource Reservation algorithms to improve system robustness and reliability. The Resource Reservation technique works like memory protection: it enhances the system robustness and reliability by isolating the task execution so that a misbehaving or buggy tasks can't affect the performance and execution of the rest of the system.

People at Evidence matured substantial Linux experience in the context of national and European research and development projects. Evidence developers participated to the OCERA (Open Components for Real-Time Embedded Applications) European Project (IST-2001 35102) developing a scheduler based on Resource Reservation to support multimedia real-time applications in embedded Linux systems. An improved QoS manager with adaptive feedback techniques is currently under development for the FRESCOR European project and for the Aquosa project.

Evidence technical support includes:

  • Evaluation of all real-time and timing requirements of the system under development;

  • Development of custom resource reservation and real-time schedulers.
